The Power 90X or P90X workout program is the next exercise program in line after the successful Power 90 also from Team Beachbody. It is designed to be a continuation from the earlier program and is therefore targeted at non-beginners. Similarly, Tony Horton is the personal trainer who will be guiding you throughout the program. Thank god for that. If you haven’t, please read my Power 90 review first and then come back to this page and decide which one is for you.
The Power 90X is a program which provides you with 12 workouts that are designed to change the way you look and feel in 90 days. By following the workouts you can end up with a body that is leaner and a lot stronger. According to Team Beachbody, the secret lies in the advanced training technique called “muscle confusion” where your body is subjected to new moves and routines which confuse the muscle. When this happens, your body will work a lot harder to keep up and in doing so, your body never plateaus, and you will not get bored. You will also be providing a chance for all your secondary and tertiary muscles to get activated and developed as well, which will in the end give you a whole body workout. You can rarely find this technique being discussed anywhere else. If you have, then there’s a chance that it’s from someone who had undergone the P90X training before.If I’m wrong, please correct me.
So let’s get down to business and “BRING IT”, as Tony would say. The most important thing that you would want to know is if the program works. And the answer to that is a resounding YES. It does work. Many people have expressed their surprise, seeing this program is seen on infomercials, but the program does deliver on its promises. The great thing about this program is that it addresses all of your fitness needs. You don’t just get a workout that focuses on one or two things like cardio or strength training, but a program that will make all your muscles work towards giving you a whole body workout, not just stomach exercises to get that 6 pack abs only.
Once you get through the program, you will have a body that is trimmed, toned and healthy. However again, you need to be reminded that this is an advanced program, and many people who were already in great shape still found the program to be quite challenging. So if you are a beginner then this is definitely not the program for you. Instead, try the Power 90 first and lucky for you, I happened to write a quite extensive P90 review here.
The Power 90X comes with a fitness guide which will help you to select the best P90X phase to complete, whether Classic, Doubles, or Lean. Classic is the standard arrangement, Doubles is where you do two programs a day on some days, and Lean is more targeted towards fat burning and weight loss. So it is this customization ability that makes many users satisfied with the program as they can choose exactly what they need.
The Power 90X program works by giving you a strength training workout as well as a cardio workout on alternate days and on the seventh day you will have the optional stretching. After three weeks, there are some minor changes in the workouts and you are given new routines to do. This continues all the way for 90 days. All this is done so that all the muscles in your body are forced to work hard and adapt. It also is done so that you do not plateau or fall in a rut. If all this sounds a tad confusing, not to worry as all this is planned out in the accompanying fitness guide.
Let’s take a look at what exactly the exercise routines or workouts that you will be facing. If you know what they are, scroll down pass these 12 workouts below to read more of my review. There are twelve DVDs and each contains a different routine which is targeted towards the many different muscle groups.
Workout 1 is specifically targeted to your chest and back. It contains two classic exercises that we are all quite familiar with, which are the pull-up and push-up. So expect to be doing a lot of these as these exercises can really build strength and develop your body shape. And the good news is, while you are strengthening and developing all your different muscles simultaneously, you will also be burning a lot of calories. Isn’t this good news for all of us?
Workout 2 is concerned with Plyometrics. This is basically your cardio routine but is quite fun to do as it literally lets you fly in the air! There are around 30 explosive jumping moves, so expect to be kept off your feet during the majority of the workout. All this jumping can be very tiring, especially seeing that you will be doing it for a full hour, but with practice, it can dramatically improve your athletic performance.
Workout 3 is targeted towards your arms and shoulders. For working these muscle groups, you have to brace yourself for movements that incorporate pressing and curling. Getting these muscles toned and trimmed is also important as you need well-defined arms and shoulders to have a well-rounded body.
Workout 4 is a bit different as it focuses on yoga. Why yoga you may ask? Well, if you are going through a typically extreme workout like this P90X program, you do need to have balance, coordination, strength, flexibility, and some breathing exercises to help calm your mind as well as your physique. Yoga X helps you get the most of the program as you need to have a healthy mind and body. And we all know how yoga can help us get more energized and invigorated.
Workout 5 is where you work your legs and your back. Expect to do a lot of squats and lunges for a grueling total body workout. This workout is beneficial for strengthening all your leg muscles like your hamstrings, quads, glutes, and calves. As the whole workout can take a toll on your legs, there are also some other pull-ups that you can do to give your legs a breather.
Workout 6 is another interesting addition to the program. This is the Kenpo X, which is given to users of the P90X program to allow them to get a very high-intensity cardio workout. You can be sure of doing a lot of kicking and punching combos which help to improve your endurance, flexibility, coordination and most importantly balance. As a bonus, you’ll also learn how to defend yourself effectively. If you’re also into martial arts, you will enjoy this tremendously. But don’t expect to be Bruce Lee in 90 days though.
Workout 7 is the stretching routine. Stretch X is designed to help you prevent injuries and avoid plateaus. Full body stretches help you prepare your body for all the demanding challenges that you will face with the P90X program.
Workout 8 is known as Core Synergistics, as these routines make use of various muscles groups to build as well as to support your core, which are your lumbar spine and trunk muscles. At the same time, these routines help condition your body from top to bottom. Many people have found this to be a fun part of the program with unique but still quite challenging exercises.
Workout 9 is bow targeting your shoulders, triceps and chest. These workouts will be targeting your small and large muscles and will be greatly beneficial for your upper body. Be prepared for all the flys, presses and extensions that can really make you work out a sweat! Although this can be tough, you will definitely love the result which is a leaner, stronger and more defined upper torso that you will definitely love to show off.
Workout 10 is now going to concentrate on your biceps and your back. Again, you should expect a lot of curls and pull-ups. If you do not want such pronounced biceps, you have the option of working with lighter weights. The routines can still get you toned and tightened arms. And of course these workouts can give you back definition.
Workout 11 is the Cardio X which is a low impact cardio routine. Although low impact you can still use these routines in a number of ways. Some people use it as a way to burn off all those extra calories. Others use it as a substitute from the higher impact routines. Cardio X is a fun workout that can still work to get you looking lean and trim.
And finally we have Workout 12, which is also known as the Ab Ripper X. This is what the majority of users look for, that is the six-pack abs who are forever looking for the best stomach exercises ever. To help you achieve this, you get 11 very effective exercises which work to provide you the ultimate in abdominal muscle strength. This will undoubtedly provide you with better physical performance and health. Once you can master these routines, you are well on your way of getting that abs that you’ve always dreamed of.
Now that we have an idea on what each routine is about and which muscle groups it targets, let’s take a look at the rest of the program and see what makes it really popular with so many people. In terms of training and support, you can be rest assured that you are in good hands. As your trainer, Tony does a really good job with encouraging you on. Many users feel at ease thanks to his good positive attitude. Tony helps make each workout more bearable thanks to his humor and humility, although sometimes it can be corny. Sorry Tony, you’re not a comedian but good try though.
In terms of coaching you on, Tony explains very well what each type of workout does, and how you should feel while doing it, for example where you should feel the stretch or the burn. This will help you find out if you are doing the exercise the right way. If you’re not feeling as you should, then either you are doing it the wrong way or you are not really pushing yourself. This is what missing with most exercise programs out there. Guilty, even I sometimes neglected this. Sorry guys.
If you are concerned about your own body type and how the program can help address your personal needs, then you do not have anything to worry about. Also in Tony’s studio are other individuals, males and females, working out together with you. You will see that these individuals all have different body types, as well as differing degrees of flexibility and fitness. This makes it easier for you to identify what your own body type is and what you can achieve by the end of the whole program. Many users have found this to be very helpful as they find that the program can truly address their own individual needs.
One other great thing about the program is that Tony is always providing you with other substitutes if you have certain health issues. Remember every body is different, and not everyone starts on the same level of fitness. Also some users may have their own health concerns, and this is also taken into consideration. For example Plyo X is a tough cardio workout, which requires you to jump a lot. If you have knee problems and cannot be jumping around, then there is a low impact substitute that you can opt for which is the Cardio X. So you see this program does provide you with what you really need. It does cater to your body and your situation.
The Power 90X program provides you with challenging routines and workouts that have been specifically selected and designed to make use of all your different muscle groups in order to give you a whole full body workout. It doesn’t matter what your main aim is, you will definitely benefit from all these routines, as you can improve your strength, endurance, flexibility, stamina, balance and coordination.
Thanks to the many routines and workouts also, you will definitely not get bored during the whole of the 90 days. You can go on for almost two weeks without having to do the same workouts twice. This is another aspect to the “muscle confusion” technique mentioned earlier. It prevents your muscles and your body from getting to a plateau. If the Power 90 workouts are repetitive and can be a bit boring after a few times, the Power 90X is the opposite.
In trying to do these P90X workouts in the program, there are several things that are recommended, like a pull up bar, some dumbbells or power bands, a yoga mat, push up stands and a heart rate monitor. All these may mean extra costs, but some users have claimed that although these items may help you out a lot, they are not necessary. All that you will truly need to work it is to have the workout bands and of course your own body weight. If your mission is to bulk up, then weights are necessary. So it all depends on you. Of course having such items around will make you better motivated to push yourself, but again, they are not vital and cannot guarantee your success.
We have established the fact that the P90X program works and the workouts can give you the results that you want. Tons of testimonials online can also tell you that. But how challenging are the programs? Many users have time and time again reminded us that the workouts and routines can be very tough. So make no mistake they are long and hard. You shouldn’t expect it any other way. The Power 90X is designed to get you into better shape, so there is an expectation that you should already be in good shape before you can get any better. If you are a beginner, or even if you are in pretty good shape but have somewhat neglected to exercise, you will find this program a bit too demanding. If this is your problem, you can easily try out the Power 90 program first, before graduating to this Power 90X.
When trying to get the best looking body that you can, you need to remember that exercise is only one part of the battle. The other is having a healthy well balanced diet. And for this, you will get the Power 90X nutrition plan in your program. This is a three-phase eating plan that recommends the best combination of foods to eat while getting through the exercises and routines. As the plan is specifically designed to work together with the routines, you know that it will show you how best to satisfy your body’s needs while remaining healthy and balanced. You will first go through Phase 1, which is the Fat Shredder, a high protein diet designed for strengthen muscles and shedding fat. Then Phase 2 is the Energy Booster, where you will be taking carbohydrates and proteins for extra energy. Finally you have Phase 3 which is your Endurance Maximizer, where you will be taking complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, and lower fat. This combination will provide you with the energy needed to push yourself in the last few weeks of the program.
Although the nutrition plan is designed to work hand in hand with the routines and workouts, there are many users who did not religiously follow the plan. This is the beauty of the whole P90X program. As long as you keep to the idea of having a well balanced diet, you will be able to successfully complete the program and end up with the body of your dreams. The nutrition plan helps but need not be followed faithfully.
Now that you have heard of the routines and workouts, and know more about the nutrition plan, you will surely want to know about the price. For the amount of money that the Power 90X program is being sold, you can be pretty sure you’re getting a great deal that can’t be beat. The program itself sells for less than US$150, and with this you will get all the DVDs, workout guide and nutrition guide. There are also some recommended supplements that you can get while doing the P90X; however these are again just recommended and not necessary. Many users have opted to give this a miss, as some of these can be a bit costly. I’m one of them.
Looking at the Power 90X program, you will find that there are a number of advantages. What about disadvantages? Well, looking at the many comments from satisfied users, you will see that there is really nothing to complain about. The workouts are hard, challenging and at times you may feel like giving up, but this is truly not a disadvantage, as you are really getting your money’s worth. You know that the program will work if you find that it pushes you to your limits.
One major complaint that can be found is from users who bought the program through resellers. The quality of the DVDs and the accompanying guides leave much to be desired. So if there is one advice that you need to consider when getting the P90X, it is to purchase it straight from the Team Beachbody site. Personally, if you still want to go through a reseller, then Amazon is always the best as it provides top notch customer service and enjoy their FREE Super Saver Shipping and you’ll get the P90X package in 5 to 8 days. In some ways, it can be better than buying from the Beachbody site as everybody trusts Amazon. Again, it’s up to you.
So in conclusion, if you are in somewhat good shape but would like to look and feel better, or want to take it to the next level, then the Power 90X is the program that you are looking for. It is a truly no-nonsense program that really pushes you to your limits and literally makes you sweat. It requires commitment and hard work, but the results are well worth it. To end this P90X review, I have just one question to ask. What is 90 days to you? As we are nearing 2011, make this one of your new year’s resolutions or make this a Christmas present for yourself. Let me tell you that 90 days is nothing. It’s just a short time. Even 1 year is a short time. Don’t you feel that it seems like yesterday you celebrated 2010 and now, it’s going to be 2011 already? Time flies so don’t let it go to waste. Let it fly but let it fly with a change that benefits you. If you are still sitting on the fence, just imagine that in 90 days you’ll have the body of your dreams. Yes, no doubt that you would have to work hard at it. Hey, if it were that easy, then everybody must be having the body of their dreams. But that’s not the case. You only get result when you work at it and it’s only for 90 days. Don’t you think it’s worth the hard work?
Anyway, I believe this is not the only P90X review you’ve read so far. You must have read a lot by now. You know deep down in your heart that P90X works and is proven to work for many individuals thus far. You’ll find a lot of testimonials online, that’s proof for you already.
