The History Of The New York Marathon

by GuestPoster on April 24, 2010

Running has been going on through the ages dating back to some early Olympic games. Marathon running began with a small number of men who pushed the limits of endurance wearing just a simple pair of mens running trainers, for the curious onlookers who wanted to see what those limits were. It was not viewed as a sport so much as a freak show. The history of the New York Marathon brought this type of running into the spotlight and the popularity continues to grow.

Marathon running had humble beginnings, but thanks to the New York Marathon, it has become a world-class sport with wide media coverage. Although marathons are run all over the world, none are as prominent as New York’s and many have been modeled after it. The New York marathon attracts thousands of athletes and many more spectators to cheer them on through the course.

The first race in the history of the New York Marathon was run in 1970 with a mere one hundred twenty seven participants. The co-founder of the race redesigned the course and the number of participants began to grow. With this new course came more spectators, media coverage and of course more runners.

Unique to the New York Marathon was the community spirit and the draw of the media, which began to intrigue world-class athletes. By the late 1970’s, New York was the main attraction when it came to marathons. Men and women alike from all over the world wanted to be part of this wonderful event.

The history of the New York Marathon has been an important aspect of the modern marathons that are run today and the main requirement is still just a good pair of mens trainers. Marathons are continuing to evolve and in 2000, New York introduced an official wheelchair marathon. This particular type of marathon has become very popular and New York’s is the most competitive in the world.
